Circuit 2 Machu Picchu is divided into two routes: 2A and 2B. Both routes follow the same path from the control entrance of Machu Picchu. After entering, you will walk uphill from the main gate toward the high point known as the Guardian House.
Before reaching the Guardian House, near a staircase, the trail splits into two routes. Route 2A continues to the left, while Route 2B goes to the right.
From this point, both routes allow you to enter and explore the Inca citadel. On Route 2B, if you look up, you will see two upper terraces where the Guardian House is located. From here, you will start your exploration.
If you choose Route 2A, you will continue walking uphill for about 5 more minutes to reach the esplanade. From there, you can observe the Inca cemetery area, the Guardian House, and enjoy the classic panoramic view of Machu Picchu.

If you are planning to visit Machu Picchu, you can choose from a wide variety of tour options. The most popular option is taking the train to Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Pueblo) and visiting the citadel the following day. These tours are commonly known as Machu Picchu Tours from Lima or simply Machu Picchu Tours.
For travelers who enjoy trekking and hiking, Cusco offers breathtaking landscapes, including mountains, glaciers, and impressive Inca ruins. The most famous hike is the Inca Trail, followed by the Salkantay Trek, Lares Trek, and the Inca Quarry Trail.
If you would like to explore deeper into the remote Andes, we recommend the Vilcabamba Trek or the Choquequirao Trek to Machu Picchu (9 days), considered one of the most beautiful and less-traveled Inca routes.

Whether you take a tour of Machu Picchu or visit on your own, it is important to consider the months you plan to travel.
If you visit from January to March, be sure to bring a rain jacket or poncho, as well as extra clothes in case you get wet.
If you’re traveling between April and the first week of August, bring a rain poncho in case the weather suddenly changes. You should also bring sunscreen, insect repellent, and a light jacket. Machu Picchu is not very cold because it is located at an elevation of 2,300 meters in the subtropical zone of Cusco. However, it is much colder when returning to Cusco due to the higher altitude.
From August to December, the weather changes again as the rainy season approaches. The weather can vary from day to day. Machu Picchu is often covered in fog in the morning, but the fog usually clears over time, revealing marvelous and spectacular views, especially from Circuit 1 and Circuit 2.
If you are taking the train to Machu Picchu or traveling from the Sacred Valley, only pack what is necessary for a two-day trip. Your daypack should be between 12 and 16 liters.
If you are doing one of the Machu Picchu hikes, contact your tour operator to confirm whether a duffel bag is included. If not, bring a 20- to 25-liter backpack to carry your hiking clothes and other personal equipment. Some tour operators include all necessary equipment.
