About Mount Machu Picchu
Machu Picchu Mountain, like the famous Huayna Picchu, is one of the big mountains that are next to the old Inca city. But, it’s important to know that it is the tallest one in the sanctuary. Also, its name comes from Quechua and is made of two words: “Machu,” which means old, and “Picchu,” which means mountain, together making the meaning “Old Mountain.”
Even though it has the same name as the well-known city, it’s important not to mix them up because they are different places. Also, the best thing about mount Machu Picchu is the walk to the top, a hard but good trip that lets you see amazing views and have a special connection with nature.
Location and How to Get There
Mount Machu Picchu is southwest of the Inca city, right in front of the famous Huayna Picchu mountain. Its entrance is in the upper part of the archaeological site, near the Guardian’s House.
To visit this place, you must get your ticket ahead of time and plan your trip as carefully as when you visit Machu Picchu. If it’s your first time in the city, try to get used to the high place at least one day before. A good idea is to stay overnight in Aguas Calientes and start climbing the mountain the next morning.
Here are the ways to get there:
- From Aguas Calientes: If you go on your own, it’s best to get to Aguas Calientes early enough, ideally the day before. From the Machu Picchu entrance, follow the path to the Guard House, then keep going on the marked route to mount machu picchu.
- On an organized tour: Taking a tour is a good way to enjoy Machu Picchu without worries. A tour company will take care of the plans and times, so you can get the most out of your visit.

Circuit 1 – Route A: Mount Machu Picchu
The ticket for mount machu picchu lets you go to the high part of the city, where some of the most amazing views are. First, you will walk through the upper terrace area of the city, enjoying the famous views from the viewpoint, before you start the walk to the top of the mountain.
But, even though this circuit gives you amazing wide views, you can’t see all of the archaeological site. So, it’s important to think about this when planning your visit. However, if you want to see all of the city, you can add Circuit 2 to your trip.
- First Shift: If you stayed the night in Aguas Calientes, this shift is perfect. Take the first bus to Machu Picchu early in the morning and start the hike at 7:00 a.m. From the main entrance, it will take about 25 minutes to get to the start of the climb. When you get to the top, you can see the city slowly filling up with people.
It is best to explore Machu Picchu before climbing the mountain, because the trip up and down can take up to 3 hours. Also, after the hike, you might be too tired to take a 2 to 3 hour tour of the place.
- Second Shift: This shift is great for people who get to Machu Picchu after finishing the Short Inca Trail, the Salkantay hike, the Inca Jungle, or a train tour. Like in the first shift, it is best to explore the city first before climbing the mountain.
If you did the 4 day Classic Inca Trail, it is a good idea to rest in Aguas Calientes to get your energy back and relax. You can climb the mountain the next day and then go back to Cusco.
