Chinchero (Andean Textile Center)
Our journey starts in the high mountain village of Chinchero, located on the western side of the Sacred Valley at an altitude of 3,800 m (12,500 ft). This picturesque village is renowned for its breathtaking views, traditional adobe homes, cobbled streets, and vibrant local culture. At Chinchero, you’ll witness a live demonstration of traditional Andean weaving techniques using natural dyes and simple tools. We’ll also explore the Inca ruins of Chinchero.
Next, we’ll head to the Raqchi lookout point, where you can take in panoramic views of the Urubamba Valley, often described as mountains dressed in a patchwork of colorful crops.
Moray: Incan Agricultural Laboratory
We’ll visit the fascinating archaeological site of Moray, located at 3,500 m (11,500 ft). This unique site consists of terraced circular depressions that were ingeniously designed by the Incas to experiment with agriculture. Our guide will explain how the Quechua people developed sophisticated drainage systems to prevent flooding during the rainy season.
Maras Salt Mines
Next, we’ll descend to the stunning Salt Mines of Maras, a network of saline pools built on steep terraces along a narrow valley. These salt pans, fed by a natural spring, have been in use since pre-Incan times. You’ll learn how the local community continues the tradition of salt extraction, maintaining the terraces and channels for centuries.
Urubamba and Ollantaytambo
From Maras, we’ll continue to Urubamba, a charming town surrounded by towering Andean peaks in the heart of the Sacred Valley. Our next stop is Ollantaytambo, a quaint Inca town known for its impressive water channels, cobbled streets, and vibrant culture. The highlight is the Sun Temple, perched majestically on the hilltop, offering stunning views and rich historical insights.
Pisac: Ruins and Market
Our final stop is Pisac, where you’ll explore the magnificent archaeological park, learning about the ingenuity and power of the Inca Empire. Afterward, we’ll visit the traditional Pisac market, where you’ll have a chance to interact with local artisans and browse their colorful handicrafts.
